Java

Java, is an object-oriented programming language developed by Sun Microsystems, Inc. Java programs - called "applets" - can provide functionality to a web site that is otherwise not possible with straight HTML. Hover buttons, for example, can be programmed in Java to add special effects on mouse-overs and clicks

Notes for web developers
Java applets can be transmitted over a network and run on any client that has the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) installed. Java operates independently of the operating system and microprocessor.

Both Netscape (NS) and Microsoft® (IE) browsers provide support for Java applets by installing a Java Virtual Machine on the user's system. However, certain browsers and versions may experience intermittent problems displaying Java applets. These browser may display an error message in the status bar.

Caveats for using Java Applets:
  • There may be a small penalty in download time
  • NS and IE users can disable running Java applets

Since web designers can't be certain a Java applet will work in all browsers, I don't recommend using a Java applet as the sole means of navigation on a web site. If you use it, it's a good idea to provide an alternate means of site navigation.
